STEP Club
Grades 6-8 only
Tuesdays 3:15-4:15 pm We would like to introduce you to the Lake Eola Charter School Space, Technology &Engineering Program (STEP). This is a “science club” that meets on Tuesdays after school, throughout the year with roughly 25 middle school students. In the meetings students will learn about space exploration, engineering and technology. The program is actually a two-year program. The first year the students learn all about the history of the U.S. and Russian space programs; the future of space exploration; learn about aeronautics, fly hot-air balloons, and launch rockets, and take unique field trips. At the end of year one, the students think about and research a place on the Moon they would like to visit, if they could for about 48 hours. The students talk about their choices of destinations and try to convince the rest of the members thattheir place is the best place to go to. Finally, a decision is made to go there in a simulated space mission for the following year. The students spend their summer researching and learning about their destination and begin discussions and work in groups to design and create a simulated mission to this destination as soon as school starts in August of the second year. The students assume every role needed to carry out a mission to space. All this is done in preparation for a 48-hour space simulation that will be here at Lake Eola Charter School sometime late in the 2026 school year. During the mission students will become astronauts, flight and mission directors, specialists in the fields of medical, biological, and environmental science research, computer and video engineers, and educational specialists.https://forms.gle/gbtx9LpmWBMAhLjN8
